Kircubbin win with golden goal !

  St Mary’s Kircubbin Double up with camogie title.St Mary’s Kircubbin became 2008 Indoor Camogie Champions making them double winners of both hurling and camogie indoor titles for 2008. Although it wasn’t all plain sailing for the Ards School who had to come from behind in the final against a very good St. Dallan’s Warrenpoint, beating them in extra time with a golden goal. In fact, neither of the finalists made the running during the group stages and both qualified for the semi finals by scoring enough goals in their final group match to qualify on goal difference. The finals were played on a sectional basis thus ensuring that each school played a minimum of four matches.The group results were as follows:

    After the group stages Portaferry and Ballygalget had won their respective groups quite well and were followed by Warrenpoint and Kircubbin.The first semi-final saw the all Ards clash of Kircubbin and Portaferry which saw Kircubbin beat their local rivals 2-0. The big upset came in the second semi, were the unbeaten team and favourites Ballygalget came up against St. Dallan’s Warrenpoint . However they were unable  to score due to the resilience of the point keeper Nadine O’Rourke while Amy Freer fired the South Down girls into the final against Kircubbin.

The final was an excellent display of skill and endeavour. Both teams gave it there all and it was the Point girls who took the lead, but couldn’t hold out with Kircubbin equalising with 2 minutes remaining. With the final score 1-1 the game went into extra time with a golden goal, and it was Kircubbin who got the winner and were crowned Indoor Camogie Champions of Down for 2008. At the presentation, Brendan Rice, Runai Cumann na mBunscol, congratulated the winners, Kircubbin and all the other 9 schools which took part, for their sportsmanship and great skill. St. Mary’s High School was also thanked for the use of their hall.
